How it works

An event on Checkpoint is five stages on one platform. No juggling a course tool, an entry spreadsheet, timing hardware and a results site — each stage hands over to the next by itself.

  1. Course. Draw the course on a real map — start, controls, finish — or import one you already have from Purple Pen, OCAD (IOF XML) or MapRun (KML). Overlay your club’s own scanned map if you have one.

  2. Registration. Open entries as a competition or free training. Set an entry limit and a waitlist handles the overflow, moving people up automatically when someone withdraws. Teams register with enforced minimum and maximum sizes.

  3. Start. Athletes need nothing but the smartphone already in their pocket. The phone registers each control as they reach it — no electronic punching hardware anywhere on the course.

  4. Live. Positions and punches stream onto the course map as they happen. Poor signal in the terrain doesn’t break anything: data is stored on the phone and syncs the moment connectivity returns.

  5. Results. Times, standings and splits appear as runners finish — no results desk, no cable to download chips, nothing to type in. Every athlete gets their GPS track drawn over the course.

  • Organizer: a free account and a map — the built-in ones work fine, your club’s own scanned map works too.
  • Runner: a recent Android phone or iPhone. Checkpoint runs in the browser and installs to the home screen like an app; there is nothing to download from an app store.
  • Hardware: none. For everyday training, even paper flags at the controls are optional — the phone knows where the control is.
